Walter Leonard Emery of Sea Girt
Walter Leonard Emery age 96 died May 26, 2018 at home after a brief hospitalization. He was born June 23, 1921, in St. John, New Brunswick, the son of Roscoe Conklin Emery and Vera Leonard Emery of Eastport, Maine, growing up in Eastport, and graduating from Shead Memorial High School. He held a county record for running the mile and played tennis. He then graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, before going into the Coast Guard in 1942 for the duration of the second World War. While stationed in New York, he met and then married Violet Rous, who became his wife of 72 years. He worked in commodities research in New York City, most recently at the investment bank Shearson, Hammill, and then served as editor at the Commodity Research Bureau. Walter and Violet lived in Upper Montclair, NJ, for most of their working lives, moving to Sea Girt, NJ, after retirement. He practiced blacksmithing at the Historic Allaire Village, and volunteered at the Sea Girt lighthouse. He is remembered by friends and family for his kindness, for always being respectful and optimistic, and for his love of the ocean. He remained interested in the commodities markets, and in anything maritime in nature. He read widely and could discuss these things fluently until his last year. He was widowed in March, 2017. He continued to live in his home in Sea Girt for the remainder of his life. He is survived by his son, Scott and his wife, Cynthia, of Portland, OR, his daughter, Wendy, of Clinton, NJ, grandchildren Olivia Emery of San Francisco, and L.Teal Emery of Manhattan, and a close family of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many friends. He will be missed. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jersey Shore Cremation Service, 36 Broad St, Manasquan.
