Thomas Urban Newman

December 26, 1921 — September 28, 2014

Lifelong Manasquan and Wall resident Thomas U. Newman, avid golfer, reader, and the family historian, died peacefully at home on September 28, 2014, at age 92. He was married for 50 years to his beloved wife Alice Jean Van Schoick. Proud of his independence, Tom was active until the last week of his life. Born December 26, 1921 in Manasquan, to Benjamin F. Newman and Rose Lafferty, Tom graduated from St. Rose High School in 1940. In the early 1940's he was a special officer on the Manasquan Police force and volunteer fireman with Fire House #2. Tom was self-employed through most of his career. During the 1960's he was the operator of an Arnold Bread franchise and then in the 1970's he was owner of Squan Stationary Store that was located on Main Street, Manasquan. Papa will be especially remembered for the lessons he taught and his traditional view on life, most importantly, the belief that the way in which you do things is always more important than the result.Survivors include: sisters, Mrs. James O'Gibney (Jo) of Lakewood, Mrs. Edward Matey (Catherine) of Haverford, PA and brother, Charles Newman of Lakewood and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving and devoted daughters, Jane Newman of Wall, Patricia Dombroski of Wall, and daughter-in-law Ellen Madigan Newman of Winchester, MA. Poppa leaves behind six grandchildren: Kimberly Newman Gargin, Benjamin Dombroski, Dave Dombroski, Riley Newman, Caitrin Newman, and Teagan Newman and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Matthew Gargin. His wife, Alice Jean, sons, James A. Newman and Benjamin J. Newman, and four of his siblings, James, Mary, John, and George, preceded Tom in death. Graveside services will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.
