Sherry Gaffey, 74, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026—her 74th birthday—surrounded by the love of her family. In true Sherry fashion, she held on just long enough to celebrate one last birthday, a fitting farewell for a woman who never missed an opportunity to make life a little more festive.
Born on January 10, 1952, in Far Rockaway, New York, Sherry grew up in Levittown, NY before eventually making Freehold, New Jersey her home for more than 40 years. It was there that she built a life full of deep relationships, meaningful work, and joyful celebrations.
Sherry was a devoted partner, a loving mother, a proud grandmother, and a sweet and caring sister, sister-in-law, and aunt.
She was widowed by her late husband, Dennis Gaffey. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Gaffey, and son-in-law, Alex Bautista; her son, Kevin Gaffey, and his partner, Casey Houska; her beloved grandchildren, AJ and Benji Bautista; her longtime partner, Steve Wishnow; her brother, Gary Waag; her sister, Marla Johnson; and her extended family and friends. She was also the proud “fur-grandma” to a much-loved grand-dog, Lincoln.
Professionally, Sherry dedicated many years of service to the Borough of Shrewsbury before retiring. She was also a highly knowledgeable and respected real estate agent throughout the area for much of her working life, known for her expertise, professionalism, and genuine care for her clients.
Sherry lived life with enthusiasm and heart. She loved dancing, listening to music, following her favorite bands, and—most of all—spending time with family and friends. Celebrations were her specialty. Holidays, birthdays, and milestones were never overlooked, and she had a gift for making everyone she loved feel special and deeply valued. Her warmth, energy, and passion for togetherness left lasting impressions on all who knew her.She was an active and engaged member of her community and took pride in staying connected to the people and causes she cared about.
Sherry fought a long and courageous battle against multiple medical challenges, facing them with strength, determination, and grace. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Fitzpatrick & team, and the extraordinary nursing staff of the BMT Unit, at Jersey Shore Medical Center for their exceptional care and compassion—especially over the past six months. The family is also deeply thankful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from friends and extended family during this time.
There will be an informal celebration of life on Sunday March 1st, 4pm at Our House Restaurant in Farmingdale; Strictly 60s band will be playing.
