Sheila J. Lalis, aged 88, passed away peacefully in her home in Brick, NJ on October 25, 2024. Sheila was born in Gortahork, County Donegal, Ireland on March 1, 1936 and throughout her life kept fond memories of life with her parents and eight siblings, enjoying working together on their small family farm in the heart of the Gaeltacht.
At age sixteen, Sheila left home in search of greater opportunities, spending a year in London before landing in New York City. She eventually moved with her husband, Eddie, and their four children to Manasquan, NJ, where they lived within walking distance of the beach, and opened a pizza parlor. Sheila also worked as a bank teller for Bank of America, and often took extra jobs to help make ends meet. Throughout her life she was no stranger to hard work, and became known as an excellent seamstress in her later years.
Sheila was always known for her pleasant and caring personality. With her friends in the Greenbriar community in Brick (where she moved in 1998), she enjoyed many activities, such as golf, cards, bowling, walking, and holiday parties, to name a few. Despite her busy schedule, Sheila often found time to give back to others, volunteering over many years with the Algonquin Theater, St. Dominic’s Catholic Church Food Bank and Thrift Store, Al-Anon, and she even spent a month in India volunteering at an orphanage for disabled children.
Sheila is predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Margaret Mulhern, and six of her siblings: Bríd, Padraic, Thomas, Nan, Hughie, and Máire. She is survived by her brother Joe, her sister Nora, her four children, John, Jane, Pam, and Paul and her three grandchildren, Owen, Ben, and Jake.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for her on December 28th at 10 am at St. Dominic’s Church.
Services are entrusted to Jersey Shore Cremation, 43 Taylor Avenue, Manasquan, NJ.
