Robert J. O'Donnell, 92, died peacefully at home in Wall Township on Sunday, April 26, 2015.
Born and raised in Madison to Edward (Ted) and Estelle (Daisy McGrath) O'Donnell, he graduated from Madison High School. His college education was interrupted by WWII in 1943, and he served as a Lieutenant JG and boat group commander on the Assault Transport, USS President Jackson.
After the war, he attended Seton Hall and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He formed an independent insurance claims service and maintained offices in Madison, Haddonfield, and Spring Lake.
He was a life member of the Madison Fire Department where he served as a volunteer for 30 years and Secretary of the Relief Association.
He married his wife, Dorothy (Donovan) in 1952 and raised his family in Madison for 30 years. He moved to Spring Lake and after retirement resided in Florida and then returned to the shore area in 1995.He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Edward, John, and Paul, and daughters Dorothy and Kathleen.
In addition to his beloved wife of 63 years, Bob is survived by 2 sons, Daniel P. (Anne) of Wall Township, and Michael D. (Susan) of New Berlin, WI; 3 daughters, Dr. Eileen O'Donnell-Winokur (Dr. Donn) of Spring Lake, Patricia O'Donnell Lewis (Freddie) of Wilmington, NC, and Sharon of Longboat Key, FL and 10 grandchildren.
Cremation was private under the direction of Jersey Shore Cremation Service. He was a parishioner of St. Catherine/St. Margaret Church in Spring Lake. A memorial service will be held at St. Catherine Mausoleum in Sea Girt at a later date.
