Robert Lewis Glen, 89 of Whiting passed away Sunday May 12, 2024 at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Edison.
Our Dad was the strongest man we’ve ever known. Even though he was dealt a hard blow early in life when he lost his mother and was separated from his 9 siblings, he escaped that life when he joined the military at age 17. He served in the US Army for 22 years, during which time he met his future wife and they married on 8/3/1963. They started their family while stationed in Germany, traveled the world, and created a lifetime of memories and friendships. He developed a love of automobiles while driving around Europe and took his little family on many roadside picnics. Stateside, they would spend weekends going to the beach, fishing and crabbing, but most of all BBQing. His favorite holidays were Easter and, especially, Christmas! So much so that he would start baking his brandy-soaked fruitcakes in September, decorations were up from November to February, and Black Friday weekends were reserved for baking and family movies. Our Dad was a jokester, but he was always there for us when we needed him.
Dad, though you'll always live in our hearts, you will be forever missed. We will remember your Sunday morning made-from-scratch breakfasts (because Mom needed a break and we wanted your flapjacks), working on home projects (after countless trips to Home Depot and the library for DIY books), our all day horror movie and Doctor Who marathons (with all the snacks and soda mom wouldn't let us have), baking cookies and biscuits before each holiday (you made every single one special for us), and counting on your words of advice (usually after one of us messed up big time). Our lives and the memories we share are a testament to how much you and Mom loved our family. You fought through life, first for your younger self, for your country and for us, and now you can find peace…rest easy Dad.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jong Suk Glen, his daughters: Susan Tritsch (and her husband Timothy), Stella Glen, and Samantha Vanaman, his grandsons: Joseph Robert Vanaman and R. Alexander Vanaman, his sister Marlene Tunstall, and relatives in the Dandy, Glen, and Gordon families.
