Richard J. (“Dick”) Vivian of Manasquan, NJ (77), passed away February 22, 2021. A 1961 graduate of Freeport High School on Long Island. He married his high school sweetheart, Vivian Lee, often-after, clarifying her first name was the same as her last. He had a great sense of humor with an endless library of jokes and pranks. A renowned one-handed pool player, wonderful storyteller and “outside the box” thinker. A man who never lost an argument (from his perspective).
He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1968 and actively supported both the Long Branch and Manasquan VFW Posts. After the Army, he built a successful career in computer sales and marketing. Traveled across the globe and most of the United States. His later years were spent as a glass etcher at Perry’s Trophy in Long Branch and as a bridge operator for Monmouth County, ultimately at his favorite, the historic Glimmer Glass Bridge.
Most of all, he was a lifelong fisherman, beginning on L.I. and summers at his beloved Breezy Point, NY. He competed in numerous deep-sea fishing tournaments from Montauk Point to Florida. A crafty man who made his own lures and could run 16 fishing lines off a boat that never tangled. Also known to drive his Lincoln Continental home with tuna or shark sticking out of the sunroof because the trunk and back seat were full. He spent most of his free time in or around the water: catching, fileting, eating, sharing his catch and knowledge of fish. He had many a fish story to tell, except most of his were true!
Predeceased by his parents, William and Dorothy, he is survived by 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 5 children (Michael, Brian, Daniel, Christopher and Deborah), 8 grandkids, 1 great-grandchild, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless cherished friends.
His cremains will be given a Military Burial at Sea by the U.S. Coast Guard. Should you wish, a donation in his memory would be appreciated by either Long Branch VFW Post #2140 or Manasquan VFW Post #1838.
