Dr. Michael Louis Smolanoff, 71, of Holmdel, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, with his wife by his side. He will be missed greatly by family and friends alike, particularly for his ability to make what just might have been the best sausage and peppers we will ever eat. Originally from the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle NY, he attended The Julliard School where he received both his Bachelor and Master degrees, and subsequently earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Professor of Music at The Philadelphia Academy of Music from 1968-1971, and was the Assistant Professor of Composition at Rutgers University from 1971-1978. An accomplished composer, Michael has over 40 classical works published and played worldwide. In 1982, he produced Santana's Malo V album, which earned Latin Rock album of the year. He was the president of Twin Faces East Entertainment from 1990-2008, and president of Handshake Films from 2008-2011, authoring and publishing many literary works, including The Scary Kids Club, Pages from a Rabbit Journal and most recently The Oval Portrait. He had a profound love for his family, and is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia; his mother, Beatrice; children, Jason, Lauren and Sean; a step-daughter, Nicole; 3 grandchildren, Ryan, Emma and Madison (who will miss her papa very much), and his bird of 32 years, Toby. Michael's hobbies included photography and a love of cooking.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, May 25, 2013, with family and friends invited from 10 a.m. to 12 noon to remember Michael and visit with the family at Monmouth Worship Center, 37 Vanderburg Road, Marlboro. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
