Martin “Marty” Sherman, 83, of Asbury Park, NJ, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, in Neptune, NJ.

Martin was born on February 24, 1943, to Lee and Ethel Sherman and was raised in West Orange, NJ. He graduated from West Orange High School in 1961 and was later drafted into the U.S. Army. After completing Officer Candidate School, he became a Lieutenant and served bravely in Vietnam, and later taught at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

After his military service, Marty settled in Monmouth County and remained on the Jersey Shore for the rest of his life, a place he loved. He graduated from Monmouth College in 1977 and went on to pursue a career as an entrepreneur and business owner. He owned several pipe repair and tobacco shops in Monmouth County and had a steady stream of regular customers whose lives he touched. He was also a dedicated member of the Sea Bright Volunteer EMS squad for many years. Later in life, he went back to school to become a licensed massage therapist, a field he practiced well into his 70s.

Outside of work, Marty loved music, staying active, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed going to the gym, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, or simply being around his family, especially his grandchildren, in whom he took great pride. He loved cooking, often making soups and other dishes to share with those around him. Marty was known for his sense of humor and kindness. He never complained and always greeted friends, family, or strangers with a smile or a joke.

Marty was a loving father to Andrew Sherman and Lauren Sherman and their spouses, Rebecca Sherman and Brian Gnos. He was a proud grandfather to Lillian Sherman, Avery Sherman, Eva Gnos, and Julia Gnos. He is also survived by his brother, David Sherman, and sister, Abbi Schaefer. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Sherman.

A service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 26, at 44 Edison Avenue, Tinton Falls, NJ, the home of his daughter, Lauren. Shiva will follow into the evening. If you are unable to attend the service, you are warmly welcomed to stop by at any time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Marty’s memory may be made to Mary’s Place by the Sea in Ocean Grove, NJ (www.marysplacebythesea.org), where he volunteered as a massage therapist.
