In Loving Memory of Jonathan Newman

Jonathan Matthew Newman of Avon-by-the-sea, NJ, passed away on September 10, 2026 after a brief and sudden illness. Born on February 7, 1977, Jon will be remembered for his love of nature, his adventurous spirit, and his willingness to always lend a helping hand.

Jon graduated Manasquan High School in 1995 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Clemson University in 2003. In his free time, he enjoyed rooting for the Clemson Tigers or working on one of his many boats or Jeeps.

Jon’s true passion was the outdoors which led to a career with boating outfitters and marinas in several states before finding his dream job with the National Park Service. Jon worked for the National Park Service for 12 years; 10 years total at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and 2 years with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona.

As a small craft operator in the park, Jon used his extensive knowledge of the river to remove hazards and maintain the river campsites, keeping countless park visitors safe. As a small engine mechanic, Jon’s handiwork reached all corners of the park: If a park boat was operating on the river, it was only because Jon kept it running. It was his job to keep the boats running, but it was his passion to perfect them. He could always tell a broken lawn mower was headed his way because of how the trailer rattled coming down River Road.

Jon was also a diver with the park’s public safety dive team and search and rescue crew. His knowledge and patience was a valuable asset to the team, and his ability to train new teammates and turn them into confident and experienced divers was unmatched.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia (Farrell) Newman; his father, Marvin Newman; his brother, Randall Newman; as well as a community of friends, colleagues, and loved ones who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jon’s honor to the Friends of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to support the preservation of our public lands, rivers, and natural waters.
