Hiram passed away on Sunday, January 1, 20167 at home with his three daughters at his bedside. He was born March 31, 1921, in Jersey City to his parents, Lucia and Nicolo along with six brothers and one sister. His youngest brother Nicholas age 92 still resides in Clark, NJ.
Hiram was known for his sense of humor and for the love he bore for his family and his country. A proud father of three beloved daughters, Diane O'Brien, Catherine Stiso and Lucia Weir, whom he called his number 1, 2, and 3 sons! His son-in-laws, Ken O'Brien and Don Weir were like true sons to him. He was also blessed with three amazing grandchildren, Ryan Walsh, Meghan Doherty and her husband Drew, and Nora Walsh and her husband Guido Elgueta. Not to forget BG Macaw! So proud to be a great grandpa Hiram loved and adored his precious great granddaughters Kate and Neave Doherty.
To support his country, Hiram joined the National Guard 104th division at age 16 not yet old enough for the Navy. When eligible in 1942, he joined the Navy as a member of the Seabees serving in World War II as a motor machinist mate third class. It was there he learned his lifetime trade as a diesel mechanic. As a member of the Teamsters local 701 he worked on tractor-trailers until he retired. He delighted in the outdoors with activities like gardening or enjoying the sunshine with a stroll on the Belmar boardwalk, talking to fellow veterans along the way. He also enjoyed the classic westerns like Gunsmoke or any film with John Wayne. We will always miss his smile, but will have him forever in our hearts.
Family and friends are invited to Lucia and Don's home for a commemorative VFW service at 5:30 PM, Friday January 15th with a celebration of Hiram's life following until 7 PM (weather permitting). Donations may be made in his honor at woundedwar riorproject.org.
