Hendrika Hetty Komjathy

October 15, 1931 — December 22, 2019

Hendrika Komjathy Hendrika,"Hetty" Brillenburg Wurth Komjathy, 88, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend to all generations, died peacefully on December 22, surrounded by her family after a brief illness. Hetty, better known as "Buzzy", was born in the Netherlands on October 15, 1931, the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Gerrit and Gerda Brillenburg Wurth of Kampen. Hetty experienced the tragedies of World War II firsthand but also acts of compassion and kindness. Her family provided secret sanctuary for two Jewish families in the organ loft of her fathers church in the midst of war-torn Rotterdam, and her family was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. Hetty moved to New Jersey in 1955 and had five children: Zoltan (deceased), Aladar, Garret, Andrew, and Ilona. She taught in the Trenton school system for over 25 years then moved full-time to Ocean Grove, NJ. Hetty became an active and dedicated member of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, volunteering countless hours to the Ladies Auxiliary. After surviving breast cancer in 2013, she found passion in working with other survivors, volunteering with Dr. Denise Johnson Millers office at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Her other great passions were her family, faith and friends. She loved the ocean and the beach: summer days would find her in her beach chair in a circle of multi-generational friends, laughing and knitting; riding her tricycle; or enthusiastically greeting friends from the porch of her "tent" or her Victorian home. Hetty had a zest for life! She was predeceased by her parents, brother Gerrit, and sister Mia; and leaves behind her four living children and spouses, eight grandchildren: Garret, Douglas, Andrew, Sarah, Michael, Christopher, Daniel and Theodore; several nieces and nephews, and countless devoted friends. Hetty could not have been more proud of her grandchildren, and was so grateful for the caring support of her son-in-law, Michael and daughters-in-law, Mary and Betsy. A celebration of Hettys life will take place at the Youth Temple in Ocean Grove on January 18, 2020 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary or Marys Place by the Sea, a cancer respite center for women. For Marys Place, donations may be made online or mailed to P.O. Box 86, Ocean Grove, NJ, 07756. For the Ladies Auxiliary: OGCMA, 54 Pitman Avenue, Ocean Grove, NJ, 07756; memo line: Ladies Auxiliary, in memory of Hetty.
