Halena (Helen) Shevchuk Van Lindenburg, 77, passed away at the Jersey Shore Center in Eatontown on March 18, 2014. She is predeceased by her father, Serge Shevchuk, and her mother, Veronica. Born in the Washington Heights section of New York City, she spent most of her adult life in residence on the Jersey Shore, although she remained a city girl at heart. Most passionate about language, she aspired to be a translator for the United Nations, but was unable to fulfill her dream due to limited opportunities for women early on. Thus, she worked as a secretary for assorted companies and the government. However, Helen remained a dedicated reader, while having a talent for gourmet cooking and knitting sweaters, a restraint for mindless television, and a fondness for J. R. R. Tolkien and J. D. Salinger, all of with whichexcept the knittingshe passionately inspired her daughter. She loved dry humor, Tony Bennett's music (with whom she'd once won a date), and good movies, especially The Titanic. Though this lifetime was not as kind to Helen as one would have hoped, she is wished a more fulfilling and delightful existence subsequently. She is survived by one daughter, Veronica, a son-in-law, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Condolences may be left at: www.jerseyshorecremation.com
