George B. Mccallum

June 7, 1919 — August 26, 2019

George B. McCallum, born to his Scottish parents Edith Goodall McCallum and George Buchanan McCallum in Maplewood, N.J., on June 7, 1919, passed away on August 26, 2019, at Monmouth Medical with his family by his side. George grew up in Nutley, N.J. with his brother Robert, his sister Margaret, his mother, father, a wealth of aunts and uncles, and grandparents both in Nutley and in Thomaston, Ct. George graduated from Dartmouth College in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country during World War II. He was a deck officer on 3 ships in 3 theaters and finished his assignments in 1946 as a Lieutenant Commander. George worked for many years as a Civil Service Executive at Fort Monmouth managing acquisition of Army communication systems worldwide. George lived in Atlantic Highlands for sixty years with his wife, Fanny Welsh McCallum, and their four children. He had passions for gardening, fishing, boating, reading and storytelling. He was known for his remarkable memory, his ability to spin a tale, his extensive knowledge of the natural world, his kindness and his wry sense of humor. In his own words he once wrote: "Fisherman recall only the good catches. Likewise, our joys and satisfactions of a fine, long marriage, of family growth, challenging career and absorbing hobbies are well remembered. Failures, pain and sadness are soon forgotten or should be; or at least tucked far back in mind from whence to warn us from time to time." George was predeceased by his wife Fanny of 48 years, his brother Robert McCallum and his sister Margaret Edwardsen, both who blessed him with numerous nieces and nephews. George is survived by his four children, George and his wife Barbara, his daughters Barbara and Elizabeth, and Alec and his wife Joan. He was a beloved grandfather to his grandchildren, Ashley Brill, Christopher Bouquet, Katelyn Goodwin and Alexa McCallum. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later time.
