Edwin Roscoe Conklin, Jr. AGE: 83 • Brick Twp. Edwin Roscoe Conklin, Jr., fondly known as "Big Ed," let the angels carry him to heaven on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Born to Edwin Roscoe, Sr. and Gladys Conklin in Trenton, Ed lived a long life filled with the love of his family and the activities he enjoyed most. He passed away at age 83, due to natural causes. Ed grew up in Butler, NJ, and graduated from Butler High School, where he was a member of the student council for all four years. He was a sprinter on the varsity track team and played varsity basketball, serving as captain of his team in his senior year. In 1947, he was a member of New Jersey's All-State Basketball team. Ed loved sports and was known as a good dancer who could jitterbug with the best. He was a charter member of the Butler Lions Club and, in the summer, lifeguarded at Jenkinson's Beach. He is a graduate of Lafayette College, where he served as president of Theta Chi Fraternity. He had a successful career in sales and marketing, working for several companies including Okonite, McGraw-Hill, Pullman Power Products, and Research Cottrell. He founded Conklin Sales and Marketing in Point Pleasant from which he retired and later sold to another entrepreneur. During his career he served on the board of directors of the Industrial Gas Cleaning Institute and had the privilege of testifying before the U.S. Congress. In his spare time, he served multiple terms as president of the Elizabeth-Carter Beach Association. He leaves behind his beloved children, James Allen of Brick, Wendy Ann of Afton, VA, Edwin Roscoe, III of Basking Ridge, Mark Freeman of Clark, and Nancy Ellen McCormack of Hopewell. He especially loved spending time with his five grandchildren, Meredith, Alexandra, Baylee, Shane, and Jason. Ed's sister, Doris Besperka and her family reside in Austin, TX. He was married twice, to Lucille Freeman, the mother of his children, and to Cathy Regan. Big Ed was happiest at Point Pleasant Beach on the Jersey Shore where he grew up every summer and later made his permanent home. His children and grandchildren have fond memories of making sand castles on the beach, boating and fishing with him. Ed was a big sports fan all of his life. His family trusts that in heaven he will find the best fishing holes and the Giants will always win. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, his family encourages donations in Ed's memory to the Jersey Shore Medical Center Foundation, 1345 Campus Pkwy., Ste A2, Neptune, NJ 07753. .
