Normandy Beach - Donald Brushaber, extraordinary inventor, craftsman, and tool and die maker, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018, as a result of a long-term illness. He was 93.
He was born in Irvington, NJ, and grew up in Caldwell, NJ. As a young man, he served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Perch as a submariner machinist mate during World War II in the South Pacific. We admire his courage and are grateful for his commitment to serving his country.
After his service as a machinist, he decided to further his skills by attending Essex County Vocational School where he earned a certificate in machine tooling. He then served as an apprentice in Newark to develop his tool and die-making craft, and continued to work there as well as in Detroit, MI during the automobile boom of the 1950s.
He met Juliette Guay, a native of Quebec City, Canada. They wed in 1953 and began their life together in New Jersey. They were married for 54 years until she passed in 2007.
He founded the Monarch Tool Company in 1958, a company that did precision tool and die work for household brand manufacturers such as General Electric, Westinghouse, Wagner, Grumman, and others, and expanded it to 40 machinists at its height.
With a long tradition of summering at the Jersey Shore, he and his wife eventually moved their family to Normandy Beach and became full-time residents. He enjoyed boating and fishing on the Barnegat Bay and open ocean. His love for boating and his mechanical mind led him to create a system for mooring boatshe is the inventor of the mooring product known as the Monarch Moor Whip for which he has 8 patents. He then founded Monarch Moor Whips in 1976, a company that today makes a full line of marine products.
He is survived by his children Julie Tarrant, Betty Brushaber, and Donald Brushaber; grandchildren Darby Tarrant, and Emma and Maxwell Brushaber; and extended family. A memorial celebration will be planned for the fall.
