Daniel "Dan" Edelson passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at Jersey Shore Post Acute Rehabilitation Center in Neptune City, New Jersey. He was 94 years old.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dan moved to Neptune, New Jersey as a young boy and spent nearly his entire life at the Jersey Shore—a place he loved deeply and proudly called home.

To know Dan was to know a great storyteller.

He possessed what family and friends often described as "the memory of an elephant." Whether recalling a sporting event, a political moment, an historical milestone, or a family gathering from decades earlier…Dan could often tell you not only what happened, but the exact date, day of the week, and circumstances surrounding it.

He had a story, observation, or reference ready at a moment's notice, and those lucky enough to sit beside him knew they were always in for a lively conversation.

Dan loved history, politics, literature, and sports. He followed the world with curiosity and enthusiasm throughout his life. He was an enthusiastic sports fan who could talk endlessly about the Knicks, Giants, Mets, and Yankees, especially during his daily conversations with his beloved younger brother, Stan. Their bond was one of the great constants of Dan's life.

Dan proudly served his country in the United States Army beginning in 1953 during the Korean War era, serving as an instructor for two years and receiving the National Defense Service Medal.

After his military service, Dan devoted his life to education. He taught English Literature and Shakespeare in the Neptune Township School System…Before becoming Vice Principal of Neptune Township High School and later Principal of Shark River Hills School.

He also taught at Brookdale Community College and, after retiring from administration, continued mentoring future educators through his work at Georgian Court University.

But titles never fully captured who Dan was.

He was a friend-maker, a conversationalist, and a social force of nature. He genuinely enjoyed people and people genuinely enjoyed him. Whether sharing stories over coffee, debating current events, discussing sports, or simply catching up over a meal…Dan had a way of making others feel welcome. His warmth, humor, intelligence, and curiosity remained with him throughout his 94 years.

Dan shared 32 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Saundra, while living in Ocean Township, New Jersey. Following Saundra's passing, he was fortunate enough to find a second great love in Joyce Hewitson. Together they shared 29 wonderful years filled with companionship, friendship, travel, laughter, and devotion.

Joyce passed away just five weeks before Dan at the age of 96. Those who knew him best believe that losing the woman he loved left an emptiness that could never truly be filled. After nearly three decades together, it somehow seems fitting that they would not remain apart for long.Through his 29 years with Joyce, Dan also became deeply connected to Joyce's family, sharing a special bond with her niece, Sherry Kelleher, her husband, Bob, and their daughter, Lisa. Their kindness, friendship, and generosity enriched his life for many years.

One of the clearest examples of Dan's generosity came in 1981, when he donated a kidney to his son Todd. It was an extraordinary gift of love that reflected the kind of father and man he was—selfless, devoted, and always willing to put family first.

Dan is survived by his sons, Dean Edelson and his wife Elaine of Sedona, Arizona, and Todd Edelson of Montclair, New Jersey; his grandchildren Ian, Ken, and Eliah; his great-grand daughter, Adrienne; his brother Stan Edelson and sister-in-law Wendy Edelson of Sarasota, Florida; and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Dan leaves behind a legacy of service, education, friendship, generosity, and love. He shaped countless lives as a teacher, administrator, mentor, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. More than anything, he will be remembered for the stories he shared, the conversations he cherished, the people he loved, and the kindness he showed throughout a long life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation in honor of Dan's lifelong gift of giving.

His stories may have ended, but the memories he created will live on in all who knew and loved him.
