Charles "Charlie" Baccaro, a beloved member of the Manasquan community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Ocean University Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 72 years old. Charlie's departure has left a profound void in the hearts of his family and countless friends.
Born and raised in Newark within the embrace of a large, loving Italian family, Charlie's charismatic charm was evident from an early age. He attended Saint Francis Xavier Elementary School, where he captured the hearts of all the girls. His journey continued at Essex Catholic High School, where he distinguished himself as a member of the varsity football team. Charlie's thirst for knowledge led him to Rutgers University, where he graduated with a degree in Economics, setting the stage for a successful career that spanned various businesses.
Throughout his life, Charlie remained deeply connected to his Newark roots, maintaining enduring friendships with childhood companions. He spent countless hours participating in softball leagues with these cherished friends. It was during his twenties that he discovered his passion for tennis at Branch Brook Park in Newark. Charlie's dedication and determination soon transformed him into a skilled and graceful tennis player. A defining moment in his tennis journey occurred when, in a fit of frustration after a missed shot, he threw his racquet during a match. Three days later, he returned to the court with newfound patience, inspired by Bjorn Borg's book on maintaining a peaceful mental attitude. Charlie's passion for tennis led him to play alongside legends such as Pancho Gonzales, Althea Gibson, and Leslie Allen. He even had the unforgettable experience of surrendering a court to Jimmy Connors and Ilie Nastase at one point.
In the late 1970s, Charlie, along with his friend Jim Lawler, managed The Tennis Club of Bricktown, where they spent their days playing tennis and singing "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights." His love for tennis extended to the Manasquan River Yacht Club, where he became a respected presence on the tennis courts. Charlie's smooth, unrushed style of play won him several club tournaments, including the Men's Senior Club Championship. His sportsmanship and courtesy earned him the admiration of fellow players, with both men and women vying to be his doubles partner. Charlie's generosity shone as he eagerly mentored novice players, sharing his extensive knowledge of the game. He also took on the responsibility of running numerous Club tournaments, displaying unflinching dedication even under the scorching sun of hot August days from the umpire's chair.
Away from the tennis courts, Charlie found solace on the Club Bluffs, where he spent countless hours with friends, gazing out over the Manasquan River with a Miller Lite in hand, discussing his passions for tennis, music, and his beloved New York Yankees. His presence at the Manasquan River Yacht Club will forever be missed.
Charlie will always be remembered for his gentle and humble nature, exuding a calm and peaceful aura that drew people to him. His engaging smile brightened every room he entered.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of twenty-seven years, Elizabeth (Cox), his stepchildren Catherine Weise (Robert), Brian Higgins (Christine), Kevin Buckwald (Rachel), and his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth, Grace, Julia, Robert, Lil, and Sonny. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Marie Camuso (Mark), nephew Mark, niece Carly (John), and his newfound role as Great Uncle to Cooper. Charlie's extended family, including in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews, will forever hold him in their hearts.
A Celebration of Charlie's Life will be held at the Manasquan River Yacht Club on a date and time to be announced.
