Catherine Ann Bate-Smith

March 5, 1964 — June 2, 2024

Catherine Ann Bate-Smith – Cathie – passed away on June 2, 2024, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, with her beloved children Ben and Hunter by her side. Her spirit was as warm and vibrant as the summer sun she adored, and her legacy of love and laughter will forever be cherished by all who knew her.

Cathie had a special bond with the beach, where she loved to soak up the sun and feel the sand between her toes. Whether at home in New Jersey or on the pristine shores of the Virgin Islands – a cherished place for visits with her family, most recently in January – Cathie’s true element has always been on a beach chair a few steps from the ocean.

Her passion to help and foster rescue dogs was unparalleled. Cathie’s home was always open to furry friends in need, and her dedication to their well-being left a lasting impact on every wagging tail to cross her path.

Country music was another one of Cathie’s great loves, especially Kenny Chesney’s annual stadium show. Every summer, you could find her camped out in the parking lot with a tray of her famous Cruzan Confusion Jell-O shots, singing along and dancing with friends and family, sharing a passion for the music she loved with the people she loved.

Cathie’s warmth and sincerity made her a beacon of positivity. Her genuine nature touched the hearts of everyday people she encountered, leaving an indelible mark in their memories and on their lives.

Cathie is survived by her devoted children Hunter and Ben; her loving mother Barbra Bate; her supportive brother David Bate, sister-in-law Alex Bate; caring in-laws Pam and Fred Caton; son-in-law Tom; and an uncountable circle of friends and loved ones who miss her dearly.

Services: To honor Cathie’s vibrant spirit, a Celebration Of Life will be held on Sunday, September 22 at the Captain’s Inn Tiki Bar at 304 E Lacey Rd, Forked River, NJ. This gathering will be a joyous occasion to remember Cathie the way she would want: with laughter, love, and a happy, fun-loving atmosphere.

Donations: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC (RescueDogsRockNYC.org/help) in Cathie’s name, continuing her legacy of compassion and care.

Rest in peace, Cathie. Your light, love, and laughter will continue to shine in our hearts and on every sunny day at the beach.

Services are entrusted to Jersey Shore Cremation, 43 Taylor Avenue, Manasquan, NJ.
