Albert "Tom" Stewart Jr.

Dec 24, 1960 — Aug 4, 2026

Belmar, NJ

Albert Thomas (Tom) Stewart, Jr., 65 of Belmar, New Jersey passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026. Tom was born on December 24, 1960 in Kearny, NJ. Summer vacations included time spent in Belmar at his grandparents' house where he developed his love of the ocean, fishing, and all things Belmar. Upon graduating from Kearny High School Tom worked at the family "Stewart's of Kearny" Scottish Butcher Shop alongside his uncle and cousins. Tom later attended a local vocational school and upon graduating was recruited by NJTransit.

Tom was employed by New Jersey Transit as a signal maintainer, trouble shooting and maintaining highway-rail grade crossings. He retired in 2021 after 30 years of service. He was a union member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen. Tom could take apart and put back together just about any engine, motor, or vehicle he came across. You might not have known his name, but you knew the bandana wearing wild man driving around town, the Red 63 Willys CJ-5 Jeep with top down.

Tom was an avid music lover and attended many concerts & festivals of his beloved Grateful Dead. Tom's happiest times were spent on his 23' Steiger Craft, and with all of his great friends & times that were had at the former Seaview Marina. Tom brought the loudest and most thoughtful gifts for his nieces and nephews at Christmas. In his words "the louder the better".

Tom was predeceased by his parents Albert and Mary (Hackett) Stewart. He is survived by his five siblings Rosemary Smith of Venice, Florida; Joann Stewart of Belmar, New Jersey; Janice Seymour and John of Chincoteague, Virginia; Eileen Mervine and George of Brielle, New Jersey; and James Stewart and Virginia of Manasquan, New Jersey. In addition, he leaves behind nine nieces and nephews and five grandnieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Sunnyside Manor for their caring and thoughtfulness. If you hear an Alexa playing on the porch, just know it's Tom keeping an eye on you! As per Tom's wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
